The UK strategy on plug-in electric vehicle charging infrastructure was published on the 30th June by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV)
The strategy set out a framework for the development of recharging infrastructure to support plug-in electric vehicles in the UK. These are some of the key points:
Ofgem barriers for commercial models to be removed
The government strategy outlines the need to remove regulatory barriers imposed by Ofgem, which would enable charge point operators to introduce commercial models to sell electricity direct to EV drivers. charge point users. This would be a significant step forward to allow for example private charge point operators such as public car parks to charge for the electricity used. In doing so EV infrastructure could in certain instances begin to provide return on investment.
SWITCH EV's unique service offerings which is above and beyond purely supplying, installing and maintaining charge points is to work closely with clients to develop business plans that take into account opportunities to develop sustainable business models which may include revenue opportunities.
We strongly believe there's more to offer than just putting posts into the ground which is why we offer distinct expert planning and implementation services that include long-term strategic plans.
Joining up charge points, systems and membership schemes
The strategy outlines a desire to link up the Plugged in Places (PiP) infrastructure with the ultimate aim to enable EV drivers enrolled in individual schemes to charge their car on any charge point across regional boundaries managed by different EV membership schemes/PiPs helping to link up the UK. To achieve this aim, charge points need to be able to communicate in an interoperable way across hardware networks and EV membership management systems. The strategy outlines the government's commitment to develop an open system to achieve this goal.
The SWITCH EV open charge point protocol (OCPP) enabled back office system for operating charge points provides a strong foundation for the Government to help define the specification for a system used to achieve the aspiration to connect the UKs EV charging infrastructure.
