Open Charge Point Protocol OCPP

The development of OCPP has been led from the Netherlands with several major European players linking up to facilitate international interoperability. The benefits of OCPP are:

  • Charge point hosts are less vulnerable to individual system suppliers – if a charge point manufacturer ceased to exist its network could still be operated through the OCPP network.
  • The system makes it much easier to create a large scale, visible network that uses a range of different charge points since there is a requirement for only one operating system. The alternative is a complex of different manufacturer’s operating systems talking to each other.
  • Development costs will be reduced since a module designed to provide additional functionality would only need to be developed once and not several times to fit with each individual operating system.
  • The OCPP will ease interoperability across Europe and minimise remedial work on systems.
