The development of OCPP has been led from the Netherlands with several major European players linking up to facilitate international interoperability. The benefits of OCPP are:
-
Charge point hosts are less vulnerable to individual system suppliers – if a charge point manufacturer ceased to exist its network could still be operated through the OCPP network.
-
The system makes it much easier to create a large scale, visible network that uses a range of different charge points since there is a requirement for only one operating system. The alternative is a complex of different manufacturer’s operating systems talking to each other.
-
Development costs will be reduced since a module designed to provide additional functionality would only need to be developed once and not several times to fit with each individual operating system.
-
The OCPP will ease interoperability across Europe and minimise remedial work on systems.
