Charging Technology Types

The three typical charge point technologies available to re-charge electric vehicles.

The suitability of the charging technology type will depend on the capacity of electrical connections as well as many other factors that we work closely with you to assess.

Standard Charging

Standard chargers provide charging in public locations and places of work. They are the preferred option when speed of re-charging is not the priority and provides a balance between cost and convenience for the charging point host and EV driver.  These charging types often offer multiple socket and wall mounted options, providing flexibility to improve access to charging.

Ideal location:

  • Public locations such as shopping centres, supermarkets etc
  • On street & off street including car parks

Key Facts:

  • Cost per full charge (for an EV that has a capacity of 24kWh) ~ 10p x 24kW = £2.40
  • 3kW standard charger performs a full charge ~ 8 hrs
  • 7kW standard charger performs a full charge ~ Less than 4hrs
  • Each Charging point requires a single phase 32A 240V supply

Quick Charging

Quick/Rapid chargers provide a significantly quicker charge than standard points, and typically are located to help extend the range of a trip and connect key geographic locations potentially across sub-regions.

Ideal location:

  • Sited on or near main spine roads in supervised locations
  • Sufficient electrical capacity
  • Publicly accessible

Key Facts:

  • Cost per full charge (for an EV that has a capacity of 24kWh) ~ 10p x 24kW = £2.40
  • Requires a 3 phase 100A 415V supply

Charge time:

  • 80% Charge in 20/25mins

Domestic/Home Charging

Domestic/Home charging provides EV drivers the ability to safely charge at home. Typically domestic chargers are wall mounted and can be located on internal walls such as in a garage or on external walls for charging whilst parked within domestic boundaries. Domestic chargers can run in either ‘Mode 3’ 32amp fast charging (2.5 times faster than normal charging) or ‘Mode 1’ to supply electric vehicles that only support standard domestic rate of charging.  Domestic chargers can have the ability to schedule charging allowing users to set charge cycles to only occur during these low-tariff periods leading to greater energy and cost savings without onerous planning.

Ideal Location:

  • Domestic Residence
  • Private Usage/Dwelling

Key Facts:

  • Can charge 7kW enabled vehicles from zero to full power in typically four hours
  • May have capability to communicate with the vehicle so that safety checks are carried out before any power is transferred
